As the fireworks cool down and the confetti clears from our eyes, it is time to look ahead and a time to introspect. We at exchange4media decided to start the year on a different note. The New Year was welcomed variously across India. It was cold and foggy in some parts of the country and bright and sunny elsewhere. Not so for the economy though, where there is much gloom across the world. But we need to be upbeat and herald the year with cheer, writes Pradyuman Maheshwari.
When I was briefed about writing a few words on my thoughts for the year gone by at exchange4media, as in the kind of work that I have done here, I thought maybe I may not have much to write about as this is only my third week here. So, I will only speak of my experience in the short time that I have been here.
One chance I get to jot down my personal experiences at exchange4media and air my views (and grievances) and I suffer a near writer’s block! But let me move around that. I am not new to niche publications, but exchange4media is a different ballgame altogether. I would define my work as very hectic yet adventurous.
The year 2008 brought me a lot of surprises and, yes, some very valuable lessons too. Little did I know that my first break would come from a B2B daily news portal. I joined exchange4media on March 1, 2008, as an intern, a wide-eyed wonderstruck kid in this vast and exciting world of advertising, media and marketing.
It has been a little adventurous for me to migrate to the South of India and take up journalism here. It is definitely not as easy here as it is to get along in any other Indian city, and more so in media. I am based in Chennai now, and working as a journalist here, especially in a niche domain like ours, has been different, not difficult.
I joined exchange4media in May, 2008. From a business newspaper to a portal on news related to the advertising, marketing and media industry has been quite a change… and before I realised it, I was glued to my beats – print and electronic media, which amidst the economic slowdown saw a lot of activity in 2008.
What a year 2008 was! While time didn’t actually fly, it sure went at a breathless pace. Things move very fast in media, more so in online media. 2008 taught me several things. One was to think fast and act faster.
While 2008 was a good year in terms of stories, there were some disappointments as well. We reporters put our hearts into every story that we do and keep relentlessly pursuing people when we are strong on a story scent. So, we are crestfallen when people back out at the nth minute.
After covering the beat for few years now, I would like to believe that I know most of the tricks of the trade and can cajole ‘sources’ to come out with their secrets. But that’s my thinking and it doesn’t really have to be in sync with reality.
This is my fourth year with exchange4media, and what a time it has been! I head the news desk here and have my hands full editing and rewriting copies, meeting deadlines. Some say a desk person’s job is a thankless one. My reward is seeing the clicks go up and the reporter getting easy access to more news on the basis of his/ her report.
You do not traditionally put out reports for a January 1 – that is a day off. Well, we thought it different this year, and some of the decisions were different. So, here sits the entire exchange4media team, penning down (keying in rather), what it was like to bring the news of the media and advertising space to our readers every single day.
