Elections 2009: At Rs 10,000 cr, country gears up for the most expensive polls ever

Conducting elections is always an expensive proposition and when it comes to the world’s largest democracy, the bill could go up to as much as Rs 10,000 crore, as per a study by the Centre for Media Studies. While the 2004 Lok Sabha elections had cost the country Rs 4,500 crore, the poll bill came to around Rs 3,200 crore in 1998 and Rs 2,100-2,200 crore in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections.

Star Plus and Colors have engaged in an interesting battle. The two channels are experimenting significantly with their inventories to corner any available rating point. Colors was bold and even did this in one week’s prime time; Star Plus, on the other hand, has been dropping inventories in weekend non-prime time for past few weeks now.

In the early days of radio, it was seen as a medium for dissemination of information, and there was always a community which wanted to propagate radio as part of the media plan. Today, things have changed. Radio is part of majority of the clients. The way they look at radio is also different. However, I feel it is still a challenge for many to understand how to use radio effectively.
