While the opening sessions of the 61st World Newspaper Congress, being held at Göteborg, Sweden, were upbeat about the newspaper industry in general, the afternoon session saw some deeper exploration of the medium. Making his presentation, William Dean Singleton, Vice Chairman & CEO, MediaNews Group, USA, hit a cautionary note.
World Newspaper Congress 2008 commences on an upbeat note
It was a mix of classical music, Swedish royalty and a look at the newspaper industry across the world that greeted delegates at the 61st World Newspaper Congress. Organised by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), the Congress began on a positive note with WAN CEO Timothy Balding stating, “Newspaper circulation has been rising or stable in three-quarters of the world’s countries over the past five years and in nearly 80 per cent of countries in the past year.”

Rediffusion DY&R bags creative mandate for Simplifly Deccan; account size pegged at Rs 40 cr
Rediffusion DY&R has been appointed to handle the creative duties of Simplifly Deccan, which is the new name for Deccan Airlines after its merger with Kingfisher Airlines. However, Equus Red Cell would continue to handle the creative business for Kingfisher Airlines. According to industry sources, the Deccan ad spend is pegged at Rs 40 crore.

Triveni Media launches Hindi news channel Voice of India; 7 more channels to follow
Triveni Media Ltd, a fully-owned subsidiary of real estate and infrastructure group Triveni Infrastructure Development Co Ltd, launched its 24-hour Hindi news channel Voice of India on June 1. The channel was test launched in April this year. Triveni is now gearing up to launch five regional news channels, a lifestyle channel and a music channel.

Sony Entertainment Television is putting all its muscle behind its attempts to win back the No. 3 slot that it has lost to newcomers like NDTV Imagine and 9X. The channel has used its big ticket property, ‘10 Ka Dum’, to whip up interest in some of its existing shows. While Sony officials are “confident” of the move, media observers caution that competition today can kill.

The two semi-final matches too have shown some good numbers. Though there is still time before the TAM Media Research ratings come in, media experts assert that the DLF IPL finals indeed have raised high expectations in the Indian media and advertising fraternity.

The Indian OOH Industry is still unorganised and quite fragmented, and though there is no official calculation, it is guesstimated to be around Rs 2,000 crore static and digital inclusive. Currently, people buy locations, but with research, the play would evolve to tracking audiences. The end game has to be about audiences and not about locations.
