Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni allayed a lot of apprehensions of the news broadcast industry in her opening remarks at the NewsNext 2009, held by the exchange4media Group in Delhi on August 26. Soni touched upon several issues concerning the industry, such as content code, carriage fees, digitisation, entertainment tax, FDI, etc. with a candid openness that touched a chord with the power-packed gathering.

Delivering first of the special addresses at the NewsNext 2009 was Aroon Purie, Founder and Chairman, India Today Group. Purie took up quite a few important issues facing the broadcasting industry today, such as carriage fees, too many channels, but only a handful of them making money. He was, however, optimistic given the open and liberal attitude of the I&B Minister Ambika Soni.

The ‘tyranny’ of TRPs vis-à-vis content came under the scanner in the session titled ‘And the ratings-content debate continues…’ in the morning session of NewsNext 2009, organised by the exchange4media Group in the Capital on August 26. One of the special addresses that added to the power-packed morning session of NewsNext 2009 was delivered by India TV’s Chairman & Editor-in-Chief, Rajat Sharma. Two key points coming from Sharma’s address were that news channels have corrected their content course, but the perception around them has not yet changed. He also reaffirmed the optimism that most broadcasters have shown in the MIB’s initiatives regarding regulation.

The well-attended awards ceremony was held in Delhi on August 26, 2009. Some of India’s most well-known faces on television, who have made significant contributions to the industry, were among the Awards winners this year. Airtel is the main sponsor for INBA.
