While there has been an upswing in readership this quarter, especially in dailies, Marathi publications continue to see a mixed bag in IRS Q3 2010, with an equal number of declines as there are growths. Magazines, however, see more declines.
From the past Indian Readership Survey (IRS) data, it is evident that dailies have always done better than magazines in terms of readership numbers. IRS Q3 2010 results show no different trend for Malayalam publications. While most dailies have shown growth, magazines are on decline trend.
There was no cheer for both Tamil dailies and magazines in the IRS Q3 2010 results. All top five Tamil dailies have seen negative growth in readership in this quarter. Among magazines, 14 of the top 15 magazines have seen decline in the Average Issue Readership (AIR).

Unlike the IRS Q2 2010 results, Hindi newspapers in Chhattisgarh have put better show in Q3. Four of the top five Hindi newspapers have seen growth in AIR. While Dainik Bhaskar continues to lead among Hindi dailies, it has seen a decline in AIR. The Times of India is the most read English newspaper in Chhattisgarh.

The Indian Readership Survey (IRS) deserves complete credit for giving the industry a currency in the absence of any other, and for bringing out data in time even after making it quarterly. However, readership measurement in India per se needs concerted attention, and hence, it is important for the industry to work with a deadline for the proposed IRS-NRS merger.
